Trinidad and Tobago has never legislated a multicultural law… What we’ve had here for a long time is a living multiculturalism. One that didn’t need to be legislated for because it just worked… In more political terms this idea of living multiculturalism is enshrined in the national anthem of “every creed and race find an equal place,” and in our national motto “Together We Aspire, Together We Achieve.” – Dylan Kerrigan

Learning Objectives

    • Intercultural Learning:  Contrast dynamics of gender, multiculturalism and community development in Trinidad and Tobago with one’s own cultural contexts. At the conclusion of the course, participants will:
      • Develop a basic understanding of the social and cultural context of Trinidad and Tobago
      • Begin to identify their own cultural perspectives and develop self-awareness.
    • Global Awareness: Prepare participants to recognize diverse cultural perspectives influencing global issues. Participants will begin to develop the ability to:
      • Recognize the relationship between local and global issues
      • Critically interpret, observe and discuss global issues, systems and patterns.
    • Global Engagement: Demonstrate increased proclivity for global learning and travel. At the conclusion of the course, participants will:
    • Be better able to adapt to cross-cultural situations when traveling and living away from home

Teaching Philosophy

This course builds on pedagogical approaches that rely on course participants “claiming their education” by practicing initiative, collaboration, responsibility and empowerment with respect to their own learning process.
