Overview

This course focuses on the intersection of education and gender, drawing on interdisciplinary research in global development and gender studies. It examines theoretical perspectives, policies, and strategies for making education more equitable globally.

Learning Objectives

In this course, participants will:

·       Reflect on their own gendered educational experiences.

·       Question normative assumptions concerning the role of gender in education.

·       Analyze educational approaches and practices that reflect diverse conceptions of gender in relation to education.

·       Develop a presentation about a global issue in gender and education for an audience of peers.

Key Assignment

Participants will develop a 3-part gender and education autobiographical study:

1.     Educational autobiography

2.     Educational biography (based on interviews)

3.     Global analysis of gendered educational biographies

Teaching Philosophy

This course builds on pedagogical approaches that rely on course participants “claiming their education” by practicing initiative, collaboration, responsibility and empowerment with respect to their own learning process.
