Completing this course can fulfill the social science general education requirement, the Summit global learning general education requirement, and count as an Education or Women\u2019s Studies elective.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will spend 3 hours in class sessions each week. Additional work is required in order to make up the fourth credit hour for accreditation purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participants will need to use out-of-class course time to prepare for class sessions by reading course materials and preparing to participate in class discussions and activities actively. All readings and weekly assignments ought to be completed before each class meeting. This preparation time should account for 4-6 hours per week.<\/li>\n<li>Participants will write weekly reflection journal entries (due on Monday by noon each week).<\/li>\n<li>For their midterm project, participants will also select a special topic\/ region to research and present in class. Therefore, timely class attendance is integral to our collective learning. Missing a class session is the equivalent of missing a full week (a complete topic\/ theme) of classes. Any participant missing <em>more than one<\/em> full class meeting an excused absence will receive deduction of one full letter grade per absence beyond two (2). All participants are expected to actively engage in the discussion and to have read the assigned material prior to the class meetings. At random times throughout the course, students will be called upon to present to the entire class a brief overview of the main issues discussed in the readings. We will be doing many in-class activities as well as peer reviewing during class time, so a missed class will impact all of us. In case of illness, religious holidays and family emergencies, please contact the instructor ahead of time and arrange to make up the missed material.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Academic Honesty and Integrity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Agnes Scott College honor code embodies an ideal of character, conduct, and citizenship, and is an important part of the College\u2019s mission and core identity. This applies especially to academic honesty and integrity. Passing off someone else\u2019s work as your own represents intellectual fraud and theft, and violates the core values of our academic community. To be honorable, you should understand not only what counts as academic dishonesty, but also how to avoid engaging in these practices. Observe the following guidelines carefully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review each course syllabus for the professor\u2019s expectations regarding course work and class attendance.<\/li>\n<li>Attribute all ideas taken from other sources; this shows respect for other scholars. Plagiarism can include portraying another\u2019s work or ideas as your own, buying a paper online and turning it in as if it were your own work, or not citing or improperly citing references on a reference page or within the text of a paper.<\/li>\n<li>Do not falsify or create data and resources or alter a graded work without the prior consent of your professor. This includes making up a reference for a works cited page or making up statistics or facts for academic work.<\/li>\n<li>Practice honest collaboration. This course relies on open sharing of ideas and group work. However, do not allow another party to do your work\/exam, or submit the same or similar work in more than one course without permission from the course instructor. Do not facilitate cheating, which can happen when you help another student complete a take home exam, give answers to an exam, talk about an exam with a student who has not taken it, or collaborate with others on work that is supposed to be completed independently.<\/li>\n<li>Be truthful about the submission of work, which includes the time of submission and the place of submission (e.g., e-mail, online, in a mailbox, to an office, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please understand that penalties result from dishonest conduct, ranging from failure of the assignment to expulsion from the college.
