Presented at The<br \/>\nUnited Nations, August 9, 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Our own shadows disappear as the feet of thousands<br \/>\nby the tens of thousands pound the fallow land<br \/>\ninto new dust that<br \/>\nrising like a marvelous pollen will be<br \/>\nfertile<br \/>\neven as the first woman whispering<br \/>\nimagination to the trees around her made<br \/>\nfor righteous fruit<br \/>\nfrom such deliberate defense of life<br \/>\nas no other still<br \/>\nwill claim inferior to any other safety<br \/>\nin the world<\/p>\n<p>The whispers too they<br \/>\nintimate to the inmost ear of every spirit<br \/>\nnow aroused they<br \/>\ncarousing in ferocious affirmation<br \/>\nof all peaceable and loving amplitude<br \/>\nsound a certainly unbounded heat<br \/>\nfrom a baptismal smoke where yes<br \/>\nthere will be fire<\/p>\n<p>And the babies cease alarm as mothers<br \/>\nraising arms<br \/>\nand heart high as the stars so far unseen<br \/>\nnevertheless hurl into the universe<br \/>\na moving force<br \/>\nirreversible as light years<br \/>\ntraveling to the open<br \/>\neye<\/p>\n<p>And who will join this standing up<br \/>\nand the ones who stood without sweet company<br \/>\nwill sing and sing<br \/>\nback into the mountains and<br \/>\nif necessary<br \/>\neven under the sea<\/p>\n<p><em>we are the ones we have been waiting for<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poem for South African Women Commemoration of the 40,000 women and children who, August 9, 1956, presented themselves in bodily protest against the \u201cdompass\u201d in the capital of apartheid.
