EDU/ ENG 320 Projects

GVP

This semester, Friday LW will continue a 5-year partnership with Agnes Scott College. However, we will be working with a new ASC professor, course, and changing the structure of the workshop. All of the continuing and new GVP Friday LW volunteers for Form 2 & 3 ONLY will be working with Professor Gayatri Sethi, PhD and 4-6 ASC students from her Children’s Literature course. GVP Friday LW volunteers for Form 1 will continue throughout the semester with regular workshop sessions described below (Form 1 Teacher, Amy Berry, will have more details for this session). Friday LW starts this Friday, January 6th, so we expect all GVP Friday LW volunteers to start this Friday. ASC doesn’t start their semester until the end of January, so the professor and students will join the workshop on January 27th.
The structure of the workshop for January (and regular / non-ASC sessions) will go as followed: We will split each class into two groups with two activities and then switch halfway through class. This will allow most volunteers to work with a student one-on-one for 20 minutes and then switch to another student to work one-on-one for 20 minutes. This will also provide a smaller group- only half the class- for the read aloud. The only needs would be one volunteer still willing to read aloud to the groups rather than work one-on-one, and one volunteer to be a time keeper (usually the Volunteer Coordinator).

First 20 minutes:
Group A (6-7 students)
Lead by: one volunteer
Activity: read aloud (assigned book for Form 2 & 3) AND discussion

Group B (6-7 students)
Lead by:  6 volunteers working one-on-one
Activity: read from text and answer questions orally and in writing

— Transition, groups switch, volunteers stay, 5 min. —

Second 20 minutes:
Group B (6-7 students)
Lead by: one volunteer
Activity: read aloud (assigned book for Form 2 & 3) AND discussion

Group A (6-7 students)
Lead by:  6 volunteers working one-on-one
Activity: read from text and answer questions orally and in writing
Once the ASC volunteers join Literacy workshop, then each session will start out as a simultaneous small group read aloud followed by a 15 minute one-on-one activity. The Form 1 activity will be a math word problem (this may change based on Form 1 Teacher, Amy Berry). The Form 2 and Form 3 activity will be a thematically related speaking/writing activity.

Volunteer roles
  • For the “read aloud” session, some volunteers will read the story while others will model good listening skills and help participate in the group discussion. (Modeling active listening is key- volunteers should not be in the back of the room talking to each other. If they need the time to prep for the next activity, they could do that, but should be in a different room as not to cause a distraction.) GVP volunteers will continue to be the ones reading aloud at the beginning of the semester, but once the ASC volunteers join, we ask that GVP volunteers working with Form 2 & 3 take a “step back” to allow the ASC students the experience of reading aloud to the girls and facilitating the discussions.
  • The “activity” portion of the period will be one-on-one. The GVP and ASC volunteers for Form 2 & 3 will each help a student one-on-one with discussing the activity orally and doing a very short piece of writing. (If for some reason volunteer turnout is light one day, the volunteers can always work with the students in small groups.)
Literacy Workshop is facilitated and supported by volunteers. We need a volunteer coordinator to serve as facilitator, help match students and volunteers (randomizing the match up is important), help keep the time, and make sure the sessions run smoothly. The teachers, Anne & Amy B., will post the assignments in the classroom for each Friday LW. The VC usually comes in a few minutes earlier to be sure they understand the assignments. Once the volunteers and students arrive, the VC matches them and gets them started on the assignments. Once the session starts, the VC can then work with students also and/or monitor the students/volunteers working on their assignments. If there is something missing from the assignment, the VC notifies the staff or if instructions run out, the VC makes copies, etc. At the moment we do not have a primary Volunteer Coordinator, so please let me know if you are interested in this volunteer role ASAP!
Lastly, we need at least six GVP volunteers for the sessions with Form 2 & 3 to work with ASC students. We will need at least 12 volunteers for the sessions with Form 1. Please see your first name below under the Form and timeframe of the Friday Literacy Workshop session that you are scheduled to provide your volunteer services. We still need GVP volunteers for the last sessions with Form 1 and/or volunteers to substitute for Friday LW volunteers throughout the semester. Let me know if you would like be added to the last session and/or be a substitute. Also let me know if your schedule will change.
